Rylands unbeaten run stretches to six in goalless contest at Oswestry...

Rylands extend lead at the top of the league with point on the road...

On Tuesday night, Rylands made the long trip to Oswestry, with the contest resulting in a 0-0 draw in sub-zero temperatures at The Venue.

The blues, playing in their red away colours had preparation for the match severely disrupted by a traffic incident on the M56, which led to a delayed 8PM kick off, with Rylands only arriving at 7:30PM, fifteen minutes before the scheduled kick off time.

The away side made a bright start, with a neat interchange on the edge of the box finding its way to the lively Wolhuter, who almost fed Jay White but the 'keeper was quick off his line to smother the danger.

The game settled down, with much of the contest battled out in the middle of the park. The next opportunity came Oswestry's way, when the no.10 headed from the edge of the area after a deep free kick, but Graeme McCall was on hand to make a comfortable save.

Five minutes later it was Rylands' turn, when Warren Gerrard fed Nev Picton inside the area, but he could only shoot wide with an effort on the stretch as the 'keeper again closed the angle quickly.

The reds countered shortly after the half hour and White found Jack Woolley on the right hand side, who cut in and fired over the bar.

The contest opened up before the interval, and the hosts came closest in the thirty-ninth minute when a good delivery from a wide free kick was met with the head of an Oswestry attacker, which thundered against the crossbar and over to safety.

On the stroke of half-time, Rylands again hit on the counter and Boothman saw an effort from 20 yards pushed wide by the goalkeeper.

HALF TIME - Oswestry 0 v 0 Rylands

The second half started slowly, with neither side offering much in terms of going forward and it took ten minutes before the first opportunity presented itself, when the ever-willing Oswestry no.10 fired wide at the near post when well placed inside the area.

Tom Parry was introduced for Woolley in a tactical reshuffle which allowed Boothman to move further forward, and the change almost brought instant reward with the latter finding space twenty five yards out, unleashing a left footed drive which was acrobatically tipped over the bar by the home 'keeper.

Top scorer, Stuart Wellstead was introduced with twenty minutes to go and Rylands began to come on strong, putting the home back line under pressure.

The game opened up again in the last ten minutes.. Warren Gerrard met Liam Moran's cross with a glancing header that bounced just wide of the far post, before Oswestry hit on the break immediately after and a scramble in the box found its way to the no.10, whose goal-bound effort struck his own man on the line and squirmed away to safety!

The visitors saw another headed effort go wide, this time from Moran who found space and met a corner at the back post.

The golden opportunity came for Rylands in the eighty-sixth minute when Wellstead's looping cross found Tom Parry, who with the 'keeper on the floor, fired at the goal only to see it bounce against the back of Jay White on the line and bounce away, much to the hosts relief!

The only remaining incident came in stoppage time when Boothman was sent off by the referee for a second bookable offence.

Manager's Verdict:
"The evening started badly with an hours delay on the motorway pretty much setting the tone for the rest of our night. We didn't really hit the performance levels that we've seen recently and come to expect which was very frustrating for us all. However, to go to all the way to Oswestry against strong opposition on a Tuesday night and get something out of a game that we didn't play particularly well in is fairly pleasing. Our unbeaten run now stretches to six games and we look forward to getting back on the pitch at Eccleshall on Saturday."
